HISTORY OF THE MINIATURE BULLDOG

The Miniature Bulldog is a non-sporting / companion breed that was bred to be a loving companion. The Miniature Bulldog breed was first recorded as being developed in America around the 1970's – 1980's. The Miniature Bulldog breed was bred from the English Bulldog breed and has a small percent of Pug and French Bulldog in the first generations. In most Miniature Bulldog lines these breeds are 5 or more generations removed. The Miniature Bulldog breed closely resembles the English Bulldog, the biggest difference in the two breeds being size & health. The Miniature Bulldog breed was developed in hopes of improving the health and reducing the size of the full sized English Bulldog. Mini Bulldogs have typical features of full sized English Bulldogs. Weight can range from 20 to 40 lbs. These dogs typically stand 12-14" at the shoulders, length is 17-24".

The Miniature Bulldogs ancestors were originally developed in London England for the cruel sport of bull and bearbaiting. (A cruel sport where dogs were put in a pit to fight a bull or bear) The first mention of a dog of the Bulldog type was first recorded in literature from around 1200, and by 1500 the name used for them was Bandogge. Most of the better Bulldog breeding was done in the London, Birmingham and Sheffield areas. Bulldogs were bred from crosses made using Mastiffs, Bandogges, pugs(for size & body type) and various other dog breeds to create qualities in them that would be needed for participation in this sport, such as the characteristic short muzzles and striking undershot jaw.

Bullbaiting was prohibited by law in the year of 1835. The Bulldog breed could have became extinct. Thanks to a few men who loved the Bulldog breed and worked very hard to save, change and preserve them the Bulldog breeds continued to improve. The original fighting bulldog was taller & more aggressive by nature and that is why it was modified with Chinese Pug in the late 18th century. Through selective Breeding of only high quality, healthy small Bulldogs we have created the sweet, docile family pets that we know as the Miniature Bulldog of today.
